The cross-cultural practice of fishing is as old as human history. Today, exploitation and stewardship of ocean and freshwater resources are inseparable from contemporary life across Canada. In Lure, artists Jordan Bennett, Eric Allan Cameron, Eugene Isaac, Cindy Mochizuki, Carley Mullally and Couzyn van Heuvelen explore the complex social and cultural significance of fishing. Together, their artworks draw connections between fishing practices—from personal to cultural to commercial, from west to east to north—that take place within a net of economic and political contexts.

The term pending evokes a state of suspension, anticipation and becoming. Across the exhibition, the material contradictions present in each of the artworks pose prompts and questions that are up in the air – pending.

Works by Sonny Assu, Deon Feng, Amanda Kachadoorian Jordi, Allysa Pierre, and Dana Qaddah each produce an affect of suspense that develops into a shared field of inquiry. Together, the works open a dialogue about the entanglements of territory, labour, and the accumulation of value, approaching these questions from distinct points of departure. The exhibition examines an in-between: the latent suspended space or condition between state and capital. Placing the in-between on hold is to map points of contact between the market and colonial structures, and to then consider concrete resistance through a reflection on belonging.

Finding Home Among the Floral Tuppies is a relational body of work by 2-spirit Métis artist Carly Nabess, grounded in stitchwork, kinship, and land-based practice. Centring the creation of tuppies (dog blankets), this exhibition explores themes of reclamation, Indigenous joy as resistance, longing, and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge, love, and healing. Each piece is co-created through relationships with ancestors, mentors, archival materials, and kin, including plant relations and Banjo, her dog.

Emily Hermant is the inaugural artist in our new Vancouver Now! exhibition series, highlighting artists whose work is both timely and closely tied to this city.

Since arriving in Vancouver in 2016, Hermant has steadily built a reputation as an artist to watch. The exhibition will highlight her weavings, which are laboriously crafted from the wires and data cables of the technologies that envelop us, thoughtfully shifting the speed and focus of our attention. They invite viewers to move from the frenetic virtual experiences that increasingly characterize our daily lives to an unhurried and surprisingly aesthetically satisfying consideration of the material basis of that simulated world.

At the Contemporary Art Gallery, Serpas exhibits a suite of new large-scale paintings: sets of mirroring images made by imprinting or “kissing” one canvas to another while still wet. In contrast to the fleshy portraits in painterly fields for which she is known, these paintings feature a more greyscale palette, dissolving their figures into voids of stained canvas. Flirting in the exhibition’s title with “rent boys” or sex workers, Serpas contends here with the movement of bodies within the narrowing spaces – both public and private – of the contemporary city.

In Mayor of the Village, Watt brings together a series of new and recent works that find their point of departure in Vancouver’s Davie Village, a historically significant centre of queer life in the city. Loosely staging the gallery as a café, Watt hangs within this environment a “survey” of his miniaturized model works from the past several years. Referencing tropes of the café art display, the resulting show-within-a-show at once evinces the ways that community is imagined and constructed in the public sphere — aesthetically, politically and otherwise — while nodding to the inevitable failures, fragilities and exclusions of these same structures.

In Public Image, Greiss presents a pair of photographic projects across CAG’s public sites. On the gallery’s façade is an arrangement of images from By the Highway, a series made in collaboration with Ser Serpas, depicting her creation of impromptu, temporary sculptures. At Yaletown-Roundhouse Station, Greiss has installed photographs of glass vitrines taken in the Agricultural Museum in Giza. Responding to the function of the display case to make its contents visible yet physically inaccessible, these deliberately ambiguous photographs double the station’s windows, taking glass itself – as opposed to what it reveals and encloses – as their subject.

Cameron Kerr: Collecting the Unconscious features new work by Cameron Kerr that explores vernacular image systems, memory and canonical forms in a variety of mediums alongside work drawn from private collections.

Simranpreet Anand’s latest body of work weighs the spiritual significance of sacred materials against the costs and modes of their mass production. Working from a Sikh perspective, her installation of ceremonial fabrics, lenticular prints, and embroidered photographs considers the notion of the “eternal” in terms of religious significance, as well as the synthetic nature of products manufactured to last forever. Collapsing commercial and domestic spaces, her exhibition at The Polygon Gallery features a living room — with custom wallpaper, a couch, and a television — beside the Gallery’s gift shop, probing multivalent ideas of worship, value, and sustainability in the 21st century.

A new sculpture by James Harry marks The Polygon Gallery’s seventh collaboration and co-commission with Burrard Arts Foundation. Eye of the Ancestor is a striking yellow cedar wooden sphere, carved with Coast Salish designs on the surface and holding a mirror-polished steel sphere inside. The composition creates layered reflections and viewpoints that shift with the viewer’s movements around the sculpture. The title is rooted in Coast Salish visual language, where the eye signifies awareness, presence, and continuity beyond the individual. The sculpture constructs this form as an immersive spatial system, transforming the eye into structure, threshold, and interior. Through calibrated light, reflection, and movement, the work enacts Indigenous pedagogies in material form, situating knowledge as relational, layered, and revealed over time.
